Hard Rock Love Songs: falling in love
Think of your favorite love song, or even your top five. Who is singing it? What sort of music is playing? What are the lyrics?
Were you picturing a long-haired headbanger? Electric guitars and crashing drums? Lyrics bearing a tortured soul? No? Why not?
Just because smooth R&B artists and piano playing crooners have flooded the airwaves with lovey-dovey make the girls swoon tunes, doesn't mean that's all there is. The rock scene has its Romeos too!
These are few of my favorite hard rock love songs. Give them a listen. Try them on for size. You might be surprised by what you find.
Paralyzer - Finger Eleven
Picking Up a Rock Chick
I think it is safe to say that the R&B artists have just about cornered the market on songs about wooing the ladies. That doesn't mean that the world of hard rock is completely out of the game.
Whoever this girl is she has got him "struck". Is it lovestruck or lust-struck? I will let you decide. But there's no doubt that Finger Eleven's vocalist is looking to get it on when he sings about "imagining a dark lit place, or your place, or my place."
Consider the beat and the odd twist on a dance video, and this might be as close as you get to hard rock entering the club scene. Though this guy would never admit it.
Tonight - Seether
Toxic Combination?
Is this a man trying to save a toxic relationship? Is it a toxic man being saved by a relationship? I suppose you could see it either way. And only the one who wrote the lyrics knows. Or does he?
There seems to be a lot of doubt about this relationship in the lyrics. The one thing not in question is that he is in love. She has him "feeling sublime" and he wants to "yell it from the rooftop down".
"Like sugar and cyanide. These worlds are gonna collide." What will the result be? At this moment, I don't think he cares. He is ready for the plunge. Hmmm. A hard rock wedding perhaps?
Say You'll Haunt Me - Stone Sour
Haunted by Love
It is one thing to tell the woman you love to never leave. Corey Taylor of Stone Sour takes it one giant step further when he sings “Say you’ll haunt me.” Now that is devotion.
This gives a whole new depth to the term together forever. No such thing as til death do us part in this romance. To make it almost uncomfortably creepily romantic, there is a certain desperation in his voice accompanied by haunting musical undertones.
This guy has it bad. And he wants to keep it. Forever. Now what girl doesn't want to hear that?
I Get Off - Halestorm
Falling in Lust?
There are plenty of hip hop videos that are more about booty shaking and "love" making than they are about any kind of romantic love. And there are plenty of rock song out there that do the same. Well why should the guys have all the fun?
There are girls out there that fall head over heels in lust. We can't help it. You guys are just so darn dreamy. Or maybe its just that we "get off on you, getting off on (us)". At least that is the case in this Halestorm track. And she is not afraid to admit it.
Unhealthy? For some perhaps. In this case, she seems to be enjoying herself well enough, and something makes me think so is he.
All I Wanna Do (cover) - Halestorm
Classic
Turned off by a girl that just wants to get off? Give her another shot. Really, all she wants to do is make love. Or so she says in this cover of the Heart classic.
You can never go wrong with a classic ballad. This cover stays true to the original, with a slightly harder edge. While not as harsh as the previous track by this band, something makes me think that "one night of love" with this girl is more than most guys out there can handle.
And That's a Wrap
There you have it. A tase of the warm and fuzzy, lovey-dovey, romantic side of the modern hard rock scene. Next time you are planning a candlelight dinner, maybe add one or tow of these to the playlist. No?
